Candidates

The best assessors we have met are not the flashiest drivers. They are calm, methodical people who can tell someone an uncomfortable truth and keep them on side.

Not currently recruiting

There is no application process open. This page describes the kind of person the pathway would suit so that anyone interested can decide whether to tell us now.

What we would look for

  • Substantial driving experience in minibuses or similar vehicles, including with passengers who need assistance
  • A consistently high personal driving standard and a clean licence record
  • The temperament to fail someone fairly, explain why, and leave them willing to come back
  • Patience with nervous drivers, and the self-restraint not to take over the wheel
  • Reliable record keeping — assessments are evidence, and sloppy paperwork undermines good judgement
  • Genuine interest in the passengers, not only in the vehicles
  • Availability that is realistic: assessments take time and cannot always be squeezed around a full diary

What we would not require

  • A professional teaching or driving instructor background
  • A PCV or HGV licence, unless the vehicles being assessed require it
  • Formal qualifications beyond those the scheme itself specifies
  • Full-time availability — a sessional commitment could work well

Being honest about the commitment

This is a real time commitment: shadowing, an external course, supervised assessments and ongoing standardisation. Whether it is paid or voluntary would depend on funding, and we will not pretend otherwise. Some people will look at that and decide the timing is wrong, which is a perfectly sensible conclusion.

If you are interested but the next few years look busy, tell us anyway. Knowing who is out there locally is part of what makes the case for accreditation credible.
