The pathway

Nobody goes from driving a minibus to assessing other people's driving in a weekend. This is the route we envisage, stage by stage.

Indicative, and dependent on accreditation

None of these stages is currently running and no dates are set. The pathway cannot begin in earnest until Community Ride Hub holds accredited centre status. Timescales below are deliberately absent rather than guessed at.

Stage by stage

  1. Step 1

    Experienced, assessed driver

The starting point is someone already driving for Community Ride Hub to a consistently high standard, with a current assessment, a clean record and real experience of our passengers and routes.
  2. Step 2

    Expression of interest and conversation

An honest discussion about what the role asks of someone, the time it takes and whether the timing works for them. No commitment on either side.
  3. Step 3

    Mentoring and observation

Shadowing assessments carried out by a qualified assessor — initially watching, then discussing the judgement afterwards and comparing it with their own.
  4. Step 4

    Formal assessor training

The recognised driver assessor course delivered by the scheme awarding body. This is external: Community Ride Hub cannot deliver or certificate it.
  5. Step 5

    Supervised assessing

Carrying out assessments with a qualified assessor present, including at least one that results in a difficult conversation, before working alone.
  6. Step 6

    Working assessor, with standardisation

Assessing independently, with periodic joint assessments and standardisation checks so judgements do not drift over time.
  7. Step 7

    Renewal and continuing development

Keeping assessor registration current, staying up to date with scheme and legislative changes, and taking part in refresher activity.

What has to be in place first

  • Community Ride Hub operating, with vehicles and a driver roster of a size that justifies an in-house assessor
  • Accredited centre status secured
  • Access to a qualified assessor to mentor the first candidate — most likely through a partner operator
  • Funding identified for course fees and for the candidate's time
  • A clear agreement covering what happens if someone qualifies and then moves on

A note on honesty

We could publish a glossy timeline with dates on it. We would rather not, because we cannot control when accreditation and funding land, and a missed date on a training page is exactly the kind of thing that erodes trust with the people we most need to trust us.

Expression of interest

Tell us about your experience and preferred timeline. This is not an application and there is no programme open today.

Dependent on accreditation and funding

Submitting this form does not reserve a place on any course. The pathway cannot begin in earnest until Community Ride Hub holds accredited centre status and the other prerequisites on this page are in place.

Give us an email address or a telephone number — at least one.

For example, community transport driver, trainer, or volunteer escort.

Minibus or accessible-vehicle driving, passenger support, assessing or mentoring others.

For example, current MiDAS certificate, previous assessor interest, or none yet.

Would this suit you?

The candidates page sets out what we would be looking for — and what we would not ask for.
